77 Walnut great restaurant for dinner
The person who received us in the restaurant was very friendly and made us feel welcome in the restaurant. The atmosphere and decor is very artistic. The waitress was knowledgeable about the menu. We ordered different soups and both of them were delicious. Main course were great and exceeded our expectations. In general we had a really nice dinner without leaving our neighborhood.
Never disappointed
I love this special little restaurant, food incredible, service warm and friendly.
Want great food in quiet restaurant?
The 3 of us each ordered fish; all were cooked to perfection and came with wonderfully tasty accompaniments (my Bronzino came with faro/cranberries ...yum). My cauliflower soup was a perfect starter . Only one of us had room for dessert -- Apple tart. Also very good
Excellent - again!
This was my fourth visit in the past few months. This visit was with my wonderful wife for a nice dinner for two. It exceeded my expectations once again. The ambiance is sophisticated, but relaxed. The place was packed and the noise level was moderate. It was easy to talk and yet not be heard by the patrons at adjacent tables. As with other times, the service was just right - attentive, but not rushed. We were made to feel at home from the time we walked in until we left. The presentation of the food was beautiful. To start, my wife had the tomato bisque while I had the fennel salad. The bisque was balanced and rich. The fennel salad combined greens, sliced green apple, shaved fennel and pine nuts with a light vinaigrette dressing, which was classic flavor combination. For entrees, my wife had the arctic char, which as perfectly cooked. It was presented with the crispy skin side up over fingerling potatoes and green beans that retained their crunch. I had the lamb shank that was simply delicious. It was a great hearty meal on a cold night. I have thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant with my wife, family, family and friends and a client. It's a gem. It's reasonably priced (and a comparable restaurant in New York would cost two to three times more). It's a BYOB, which I love as a wine person. Seventy7 Walnut is a restaurant that needs to be tried if you haven't been there. My sense is you will find yourself back again. It's really that good.
Very nice find
We've been here twice and both visits were very pleasant. We will be back for a third time.....
Once Again And Always Outstanding !
Have been here many times and recently had dinner during the week. We had the most fantastic dinner that consisted of a beautifully presented filet mignon, perfectly cooked as we ordered it and a special that evening of the most delicious loin of venison I have ever tasted. The profiteroles were sinful and the Affogato with vanilla ice cream and espresso with biscotti topped off a perfect dinner! The menu changes monthly so it never gets mundane that seems to be typical of restaurants these days. Impeccable service from a very knowledgeable staff. We go out often and this restaurant is one of the finest around. If you haven't been here…..you'll be happy that you came.
Happy January 2015 Menu!
The roasted tomato soup had the best flavor! We also enjoyed the pine nut crusted cod and special lobster risotto tonight. This was a difficult visit as there were so many other items we wanted, the Filet with special steak sauce, the homemade pasta, the scallop appetizer - so many reasons to return in January! Happy almost 1 year anniversary to Frank and team, we are so glad you are in our neighborhood.
Montclair gem
77 was recommended to me and holds it on well competing with many fine restaurants in Montclair. I had scallops to start which were fresh, perfectly prepared and delicious. My main course was the salmon which was fresh and excellent as well. My date, a vegan, started with a very fresh and tasty salad and a flavorful mushroom risotto was specially prepared as well. Entrees were priced well for the quality at the upper 20's to mid 30's makes 77 Walnut a place that I will look forward to returning to.

Very friendly and competent staff. Food was prepared and presented nicely. The menu was a little limited and a little pricey.
Outstanding!!
I came here to celebrate my birthday and had the most amazing meal :) it it one of those restaurants where everything on the menu is amazing! The ambiance is fabulous and perfect for special occasions!
We'll be back
This restaurant site has gone through several reincarnations, including one called Seventy-Seven Walnut. Here's a new 77, withg better food. I had flounder, my husband pumpkin ravioli. Both quite good. Biscotti at $1 each were excellent and a way to have a little sweet at the end. We'll be back. Wood floors make it unnecessarily noisy.

Excellent most fresh and in-season ingredients. Our food was exquisite! Every course. Totally recommend it.
A Gem in Montclair
My girlfriend and I went here for a date night. We were greeted promptly by the Maître d and brought to our table by a large window facing the street. We brought our own wine (BYOB) and ordered the PEI Mussels and a salad. Food arrived very quickly and was excellent. Our waitress was very attentive to our needs and very helpful in understanding the menu. For the main course I had the Swordfish/Scallops which was wonderful. Add on the fact that the menu changes every month and you can bet that we'll be back!
Seventy7 is outstanding.
The food, service and ambiance were fantastic as this relatively new neighborhood BYOB in Montclair, NJ. The dining room decor is sophisticated, warm and inviting. The service was outstanding with just the right level of attentiveness. You feel welcomed from the moment you arrive until you leave. The menu is diverse enough to appeal to everyone, yet concise enough to not be overwhelming. The food was outstanding, using the highest quality ingredients, and presented beautifully. This was my second visit in a few weeks and both experiences were great. I am always looking for excellent BYOB restaurants and this is at the top of the list. Seventy7 is a somewhat undiscovered gem. It's a great place to bring the family, friends or clients. I'm also looking forward to a romantic dinner with my wife in the next couple of weeks. Prices were very reasonable for the quality of the food, service and space. Try it. I think you will be pleased.
Neighborhood Surprise
Attractive décor, friendly and efficient service, along with surprisingly good food make this latest iteration of 77 Walnut a real contender on the competitive Montclair restaurant scene. A little pricey and esoteric to qualify as a go to neighborhood restaurant but good for special evenings. Also a little noisy when full - but what isn't
One of the best in Montclair
Great food, attentive service and comfortable surroundings combine to make this a fun and enjoyable place to dine. We enjoyed our dinner and had a terrific time. After enjoying a memorable dinner, we were pleasantly surprised at the check which was much lower than we expected it to be. We'll be going back with friends for another great evening.
Delicious and welcoming
This restaurant is a quiet sophisticated gem. I eat in many NYC restaurants and this is a very special place. This past visit the young man filling our water glasses turned out to be a very gifted cello player and played for us, very special.
The Reviews Were Right
I took a date there, based on previous reviews. From minute one, we were welcomed warmly. Our hostess was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The ambiance was date-perfect; not too loud, not like a library. The food, from appetizers to entrees, was out of this world. The only thing I wish I'd known prior is that it's BYOB for wine. From start to finish, an incredible experience.
Yummy and we will return
I can't wait to return, the menu changes monthly, so describing what I ate - it may not be there next month. I love it! Mind you the pork chop seems according to the waitress stays, but the sides may be a little different. The crème brulee was tasty, but a bit undercooked for my taste.
